4 Things I noticed at the Van Gogh Museum

Dedicated to one of the most recognizable painters of the 19th century (arguably of all time), the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is a great add to the itinerary for the whole family. This museum, which opened in 1973, was met with some pushback from people that argued against having a single museum in Amsterdam dedicated to only one artist. It is centrally located near the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, and the Concertgebouw.

The Van Gogh Museum is not on the I Amsterdam tourist card

If you are visiting with the I Amsterdam card, more on that here, you may be disappointed to find out that it is not included in either a discount or free admission. There are other ways to get a discounted or free ticket, otherwise admission will set you back 22 Euros. You need to book your time slot in advance so I strongly recommend booking as far out as possible.

Taking the train is extremely easy to get to the museum

Taking the public tram is extremely easy and you will arrive right near the door. Note, if you get off on the 2, 5, 12 Museumplein, just don’t accidentally attempt to enter in through the group entrance like we did. Go around towards the courtyard towards the main entrance, it is a lot more grand and obvious.

The special exhibits are a must-see

To celebrate the museum’s 50th anniversary, there was a Pokémon collaboration in 2023. I know, it sounds crazy but it works. I was so pleasantly surprised to see our little friend painted in the iconic Van Gogh style. There was a featured gallery showing a variety of Pokémon inspired by the painter. Of course, the gift shop also had the Pokémon collaboration for purchase. Unfortunately, the Pokémon exhibit ended in early Jan 2024.

There are constantly special exhibits traveling in and out. Keep an eye out and be sure to cross the corridor in the main area to the special exhibit on the other side of the museum.

The museum is only four levels but there is plenty to see

Upon entry, you will go down the escalators where a small café and gift shop await. There is a location for lockers and restroom. You will then need to show your ticket again before taking an escalator up to the exhibit. From there, you walk four floors, learning about Van Gogh’s live and influence. There are obviously many paintings by him but also works from his friends or those who inspired him.

Conclusion

This museum is absolutely a must-visit for first-timers. There are several fascinating and thought-provoking pieces of artwork. In addition to the permanent pieces, you can see some traveling and on-loan paintings. Plus, don’t forget to walk across to the travelling exhibit on the other side of the corridor where you might be surprised by what is on display.
