24 Hours in Galway, Ireland

Latin Quarter of Galway.

Galway is just over two hours from Dublin making it another great day trip stop. You can also consider staying for a night to truly get the Galway experience. Located on the western side of the island, Galway offers a different taste of what Ireland has to offer. The University of Galway anchors several local and international students in the vibrant town.

Morning:

Arrive in Galway either from the south if you were visiting the Cliffs of Moher or the east from Dublin.

If you need a place to park, Galway offers public parking for a nominal fee.

Midday:

Take a stroll towards the water towards the Galway Cathedral and the Salmon Weir Bridge. Bothe of these locations gives you a taste of the history of Galway. You can visit the cathedral for free but a small donation is recommended. Take a look inside, just be sure to not visit when mass or another ceremony is in session.

Most of your time in Galway should be spent walking the cobblestone streets through the shops and finding some great pubs and restaurants. Be sure to visit the Latin Quarter where you can do a variety of shopping, people watching, and grab food. This is where I recommend you spend most of your evening so it is good to get a taste of it in the daylight.

Galway is totally a foodie town so spend the rest of the afternoon pub hopping and trying new foods.

Evening:

If you are only staying for a day trip, you can plan to head back to Dublin or wherever you are staying after you have eaten dinner. If you are staying the night, the party continues as the bars and pubs come alive with live music, clanging pint glasses, and crowds chattering.

Notable Restaurants:

The Dough Bros – super casual pizza place

The Kings Head Bistro – a moody classic pub

Sheridans Wine Bar and Wine Shop – casual but refined wine and cheese shop

The Seafoodbar at Kirwan’s – upscale seafood dining experience
